Manage product variants
Edit a variant, change prices in bulk, turn a variant off, and add or remove options
After you create a multi-variant product, you can fine-tune each variant, update many at once, or switch one off.
Before you start
- You need the Shop Manager role.
- Open the product from Products. The Variants section lists every combination with its SKU, Price, On hand (when Track inventory is on) and Status.
Find a variant
- Type in Search variants or SKU.
- Use the filter to show All variants, Needs setup, Custom values (variants with their own price or settings) or Disabled.
- The banners above the table have a View button that applies the matching filter.
Edit one variant
- In the Variants table, select Edit on the row.
- Change what you need:
- Available for sale: turn off to hide this variant from your store.
- Stock on hand (when tracking stock).
- Price, This price includes tax and Cost of goods. The Margin shows as you type.
- Low stock alert at.
- SKU and Barcodes. See SKUs, barcodes and manufacturers.
- Select Save variant.
- Save the product itself with Save Draft or Save changes.
Fields marked Default follow the product's defaults. Typing your own value makes the variant Overridden.
Important: Changes you make to variants stay on the page until you save the product.
Change prices for several variants
- Tick the boxes beside the variants. The bar shows how many variants are selected.
- Select Edit prices.
- Under Price change, Set new price is selected. Enter the New price. The table shows each variant's Current and New price.
- Select Apply to N variants.
- Save the product.
Reset variants to the defaults
- Tick the variants and select Reset to defaults.
- Confirm with Reset to default. Any custom price, cost and other settings on those variants are lost and they follow the product defaults again.
Turn a variant off
Turn off Available for sale and select Save & disable variant. The variant is hidden from your store, but its stock, price and SKU are kept. Turn it back on any time. Its status shows as Disabled.
Add or remove options later
- Select Edit (pencil) on an attribute to add options. Only the new combinations are created. Existing variants keep their price, stock and SKU.
- Remove an attribute with the bin icon. You're asked to confirm, because its variants and their stock are removed. If you add the same option again later, you get a fresh variant to set up.
- Drag attributes or options to change the order customers see.
Good to know
- Needs setup means a variant has no price or, with tracking on, no stock count. It blocks publishing until fixed.
- Once a tracked product is published, Stock on hand is locked. Use Adjust stock levels instead.
- An Archived product's variants are view-only (View).
