Barcode or MIFARE/RFID Cards

This article is to help assist you with the difference between a barcode card or an MIFARE/RFID Card

Student Card Technology

To correctly integrate your existing cards with our system, we need to know which type of card you are currently using. Different card types require different hardware and setup configurations, confirming this upfront ensures a smooth and accurate setup. Please see the below information if you are unsure.

Barcode Cards

If you use barcode cards, the card will have a printed barcode on the front or back that is scanned using a barcode scanner or device camera.

Key indicators:

  • A visible barcode printed on the card
  • Cards must be scanned with the barcode facing the scanner
  • No tapping is involved

Notes:

  • Barcode integrations rely on the printed number being scanned
  • Cards must be clearly printed and readable

MIFARE / RFID cards

If you use MIFARE or RFID cards, the card contains an embedded chip and is read by tapping or holding it near a reader.

Key indicators:

  • No barcode is required to be scanned
  • Cards are tapped on a reader (contactless)
  • Often used for access control, cashless payments, or printing

Notes:

  • Integration uses the card’s RFID serial number (CSN)
  • Requires RFID/MIFARE-compatible readers
  • Cards do not need to be visible or aligned to be read
