Duplicate a product

Copy a product, variants or bundle as a new draft and tweak it

Duplicating a product gives you a new draft with the same details. It's the quickest way to add a similar item, such as the same jumper in another style.

Before you start

Duplicate a product

  1. Go to Products.
  2. On the product's row, open the ⋮ menu and select Duplicate.
  3. In Duplicate {product name}?, select Duplicate.
  4. A message confirms the copy, for example "Copy of Winter Jumper duplicated". The new product is a Draft named Copy of followed by the original name.
  5. Open the copy, rename it and make your changes.
  6. Select Save Draft or Publish. See Product status and visibility.

What's copied

Product type Copied to the new draft
Any product Description, collections, add-ons and whether each is required, photos, and the attachment (such as a size guide).
Standard product Price, cost of goods, This price includes tax setting, Track inventory, Preorder and the availability message.
Product with variants Attributes and options, and each variant's price, cost of goods and tax setting.
Bundle The products, their quantities and the bundle price.

What gets a fresh start

  • Name. It starts with "Copy of", so you can tell the two apart.
  • Status. The copy is always a Draft, even if the original is published.
  • SKUs. Each item gets a new automatic SKU. See SKUs, barcodes and manufacturers.
  • Barcodes. They aren't copied, because a barcode can only belong to one item.
  • Stock. The copy has its own stock, which starts empty. Enter or adjust it for the new product.

The copy is independent. Changing it never changes the original.

Good to know

  • Duplicate works on Published, Draft and Archived products.
  • Photos are copied as new files. The attachment points to the same file as the original. If you remove it from the copy, the original keeps its attachment.
  • If you duplicate a copy, the new name becomes "Copy of Copy of …". Rename it before you publish.
  • The new product appears at the top of your Products list.

Troubleshooting

I see "Couldn't duplicate product, try again." Nothing is created when this happens. Try again. If it keeps failing, check the original's photos and attachment open correctly, then contact Flexischools.
