Set up tax on products

Tell the Shop whether your prices already include tax

The Shop needs to know whether the price you enter already includes tax, so it can record the tax portion of each order correctly.

Where to find the setting

The checkbox This price includes tax appears wherever you enter a price:

You're editing Where it is
A standard product Pricing, under the Price field
A product with variants Variants, under the default price. Each variant's Edit variant window has its own checkbox.
A bundle Bundle contents, step 3, under Bundle fixed price
An add-on A single These prices include tax checkbox in the options section

It is ticked by default.

Choose the right option

  1. Open the product and go to the pricing field.
  2. Tick This price includes tax if the amount you typed already contains tax. This is the usual choice.
  3. Untick it if the price has no tax in it.
  4. Save the product.

What each option does

  • Ticked. The Shop works out how much of the price is tax, using the tax rate held on your supplier record, and stores it. The price the customer pays doesn't change. For example, at a 10% rate an $11.00 price contains $1.00 of tax.
  • Unticked. No tax is recorded and none is added on top. The customer pays the price you entered.

Good to know

  • One checkbox covers both the price and the cost of goods on a standard product. There is no separate tax box for cost.
  • For a bundle, tax is worked out from the Bundle fixed price only, not from the products inside it.
  • For a product with variants, the product-level checkbox is the default. A variant can have its own setting, which makes it Overridden.
  • Your tax rate isn't set in the Store Portal. It's held on your supplier record. If it looks wrong, contact Flexischools.
  • If you change your tax rate, products you've already saved keep their old tax amounts until you save them again.

Troubleshooting

My save fails and mentions the tax rate. This only happens when This price includes tax is ticked and the rate can't be read. You may see "The supplier's tax rate could not be retrieved." (try again in a moment), "Supplier tax rate is invalid." or "You do not have access to read this supplier's tax rate." For the last two, contact Flexischools.

Do I need to tick the box for the cost of goods too? No. The single checkbox applies to both.
